The Human Rights, Liberty Access and Peace Defenders’ Foundation (HURIDE) and the Campaign for Democracy (CD), South East Zone, have jointly appealed to the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to commemorate his third anniversary in office by granting amnesty to three native doctors currently detained by the State Government.

HURIDE identified the three native doctors as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki from Oba, Eke Hit from Okija, and Onyeze Jesus from Nkpor.

In a joint statement, the Executive Director of the human rights body and CD South East Zonal Chairman, Dede Uzor A. Uzor, urged the Governor to release the men as a gesture of goodwill to their families during this celebratory period.

The trio were arrested for allegedly using social media to negatively influence young people, thereby projecting a poor image of society.

According to the groups, their actions promoted an extravagant lifestyle and crime, leading youths to believe that hard work is futile unless they engage in criminal activities such as “Okeite” or “Awale,” “Yahoo Plus,” and other deceptive practices.

The groups stated that these activities fostered significant insecurity and unrest in the state, with numerous young individuals embracing such criminal and unconventional lifestyles.

“However, since their apprehension, we are confident that they have learned a valuable lesson.

Governor Soludo should require them to sign an undertaking, pledging to cease such crude, unethical, and diabolical practices, in accordance with the State’s existing laws,” they implored the Governor.

HURIDE urged Governor Soludo to grant them amnesty in the spirit of his successful three-year anniversary, acknowledging his significant contributions to improving the lives of the State’s citizens. The organization specifically commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his transformative work in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area, noting its revitalization into a modern city. A team of human rights representatives recently visited Okpoko for the first time and were astonished by the level of development in the community, congratulating the Governor on his commendable efforts.

“Governor Soludo should allow them to return home and refrain from further wrongdoing. After all, to err is human, and to forgive is divine.

Some of them have been detained for over two months.
We implore the Governor to review their cases and permit them to return home,” the groups appealed to Governor Soludo.
