Illegal Migration: FG Warns Nigerians Against Deadly Sahara, Mediterranean Routes

The Federal Government has cautioned Nigerians against embarking on irregular migration through the Sahara Desert and across the Mediterranean Sea, warning that such journeys continue to claim lives and expose migrants to exploitation, abuse and other grave dangers.

The warning was issued by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, during a meeting in Abuja with Mr.

According to a statement by the Ministry, Emmanuel recounted his traumatic experience, including a boat accident that claimed the lives of 28 people attempting the dangerous crossing to Europe.

Ebienfa commended Emmanuel for using his experience to campaign against illegal migration, describing his advocacy as an important contribution to efforts aimed at discouraging Nigerians from undertaking similar perilous journeys.

He noted that the Federal Government remains deeply concerned about the devastating human cost of irregular migration, stressing that many migrants have either lost their lives or suffered severe abuse at the hands of traffickers and smugglers.

The spokesperson said migrants travelling through illegal routes often endure harsh desert conditions, exploitation in transit countries, detention and abuse, as well as the constant risk of drowning while crossing the Mediterranean Sea.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to addressing the root causes of irregular migration through expanded economic opportunities, stronger border management, intensified action against human trafficking and migrant smuggling networks, and collaboration with destination and transit countries to promote safe, orderly and regular migration.

Ebienfa also said the government would continue to support the voluntary return, protection, psychosocial care and sustainable reintegration of Nigerians in distress abroad, adding that Nigerian missions remain available to provide consular assistance where necessary.

The Ministry urged Nigerians, particularly young people, to exercise caution, verify migration information carefully and resist the false promises of traffickers, warning that irregular migration frequently ends in tragedy.
