A devastating fire has swept through a luxury Swiss ski resort in Crans-Montana, leaving at least 40 tourists dead and no fewer than 115 others injured. The blaze broke out at a crowded bar within the multi-storey resort as visitors gathered to celebrate the New Year, quickly transforming festivities into scenes of panic and despair.
The flames spread rapidly through the building, trapping many occupants and forcing others into desperate attempts to escape. Local police reported that numerous victims were rescued with severe burns, while several others remain in critical condition at nearby hospitals.
According to a police spokesperson, Beatrice Pillourd, the death toll could rise as emergency responders continue rescue and recovery efforts. She noted that the exact number of casualties would be confirmed later, adding that a full investigation into the incident has commenced.
Emergency services battled the inferno throughout the night as thick smoke and fire engulfed the resort, leaving widespread destruction at one of Switzerland’s most popular tourist destinations.
