June 12: Labour Party Demands Action on Insecurity, Hardship
The Labour Party has called on Nigerians to remain optimistic about the country’s future despite the prevailing economic and security challenges facing the nation.
This is contained in a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, in Abuja.
The statement describes June 12 as a landmark in Nigeria’s democratic journey and a reminder of the sacrifices made by pro-democracy advocates who fought for democratic governance.
It pays tribute to the late Chief MKO Abiola and other patriots whose courage and sacrifices contributed significantly to the restoration of democratic rule and laid the foundation for the democracy Nigerians enjoy today.
According to the statement, although Nigeria’s democratic experience has been marked by setbacks and unmet expectations, citizens should not lose hope in the prospect of a better country.
The party notes that democracy remains the most effective system of government because it gives citizens a voice and places the people at the centre of governance.
However, it urges governments at all levels to strengthen efforts toward tackling insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, hunger, and infrastructure deficiencies affecting millions of Nigerians.
The statement emphasizes that the true benefits of democracy should be reflected in improved living standards and expanded opportunities for ordinary citizens.
It further reiterates the party’s commitment to the principles of equal opportunity and social justice, describing them as critical foundations of a functional democratic system.
The Labour Party warns that democracy cannot flourish where citizens and political stakeholders are denied fairness, equal opportunities, and a level playing field.
As the country approaches another election cycle, the party encourages Nigerians not to give in to despair but to remain actively involved in the democratic process.
The statement also pledges that the Labour Party will continue to provide a credible political platform through which the aspirations of Nigerians can be pursued and achieved.
It expresses confidence that leaders with integrity, competence, and capacity can reposition the nation toward prosperity, justice, and national renewal.
