Katsina State Government to Launch Fleet of Hybrid Buses to Cut Transport Costs, Emissions

In a bid to modernize public transportation and reduce the financial burden of travel for residents, the Katsina State Government is set to unveil a fleet of 30 hybrid buses, marking a major step toward sustainable urban mobility.

The initiative, spearheaded by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, aims to promote environmentally friendly transport while making commuting more affordable for the people of Katsina.

The new buses, powered by both diesel and electricity, will serve key routes in Katsina, Daura, and Funtua, with plans for statewide expansion.

During a press briefing, Ambassador Bernard Oshi, Business Partner of Zhong Tong Buses, praised the state government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for its citizens.

“The government’s commitment to improving citizens’ quality of life through innovative, eco-friendly infrastructure is worth celebrating,” Oshi said.
“These hybrid buses will cut carbon emissions and reduce travel costs for residents.”

The hybrid buses are designed to be energy-efficient and will help reduce the consumption of diesel, thus lowering fuel costs and carbon emissions. Each bus is capable of carrying between 45 to 55 passengers, making them an ideal solution for high-demand urban routes.

Project Manager Mr. Wei Yanbin also lauded Governor Radda for his support and leadership, stating:

“We want to use this opportunity to appreciate His Excellency, Governor Radda. He has really tried for the state and for his people.”

Mr. Yanbin revealed further plans for infrastructure development under the project, which include the construction of:
Three new bus terminals, Sixty new bus stops along the selected routes.

He confirmed that the project is scheduled to commence in October 2025 and will be delivered within six months.

In response to questions about the environmental benefits of the hybrid fleet, Yanbin explained:

“This hybrid system conserves diesel and energy, reducing the cost of fuel while minimizing emissions. It’s an efficient solution that supports both economic and environmental goals.”

The Katsina State Government’s public transportation upgrade reflects its broader agenda of sustainable development and innovation, aiming to set a benchmark for other states across Nigeria.
