The Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, Abuja, has held its maiden inmates’ debate competition as part of efforts to promote education, vocational training and rehabilitation among inmates.

The competition, held on Thursday, October 15, 2026, featured two teams debating the merits of formal education and vocational skills in preparing inmates for successful reintegration into society.

Team A argued in favour of education, while Team B advocated vocational skills. Each team had five speakers, with the judges declaring Team B the winner after an intense intellectual contest.

Speaking at the event, the Officer-in-Charge of the centre, Assistant Controller of Corrections Adekunmi Sunday, said the initiative was designed to strengthen inmates’ intellectual abilities, build their confidence and encourage positive social interaction.

Sunday explained that the programme was part of efforts to reposition the custodial centre as an institution focused on reformation, rehabilitation and learning.

“Custody without training is punishment; custody with training is correction,” he said.

The Controller of Corrections, Federal Capital Territory Command, Christopher Peter Jen, commended the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, for the opportunity to serve, saying it had strengthened his commitment to supporting inmates’ rehabilitation across the command.

Jen expressed optimism about the future of inmates, emphasising that effective reformation could enable them to attain leadership positions and make meaningful contributions to society.

“An inmate today can be a Governor or any high-ranking individual in the society tomorrow, if properly reformed,” he said.

He also disclosed that the command was collaborating with relevant stakeholders and support organisations to secure employment opportunities for inmates upon their release.

The event featured goodwill messages from partner organisations and other stakeholders, who commended the Nigerian Correctional Service for promoting education and rehabilitation within custodial facilities.

In his vote of thanks, delivered on behalf of the Officer-in-Charge by Superintendent of Corrections Yusuf Muye, the centre appreciated the FCT Controller of Corrections, partners, staff and inmates for contributing to the success of the maiden competition.

The centre also assured that the debate would become a regular feature of its reformation programme.

The initiative reflects the Nigerian Correctional Service’s efforts to promote rehabilitation and equip inmates with the knowledge and practical skills needed to rebuild their lives and contribute positively to society after discharge.
