NGE Conference: Former NBA President Calls for Better Understanding of Digital Election Evidence
Enugu — A former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has called for a clear understanding of the growing role of digital technology in the resolution of election petitions in Nigeria.
Mr. Osigwe made the call while speaking on “Election Petitions in the Digital Age: Independence, Evidence, BVAS and the Courts” at the conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Enugu.
He examined the challenges surrounding the use of digital evidence in election disputes, particularly evidence generated through the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).
The legal expert stressed the importance of properly presenting, authenticating and evaluating such evidence within the legal framework governing election petitions.
Mr. Osigwe also highlighted the role of the courts in determining electoral disputes, noting that the effectiveness and credibility of the electoral justice system depend on the proper application of the law and credible evidence.
He said developments in election technology require journalists, legal practitioners and other stakeholders to understand the changing dynamics of electoral evidence in Nigeria.
The theme of the conference is “The Ballot, the Media, and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive.”
