Nigerian passport holders can now travel to 45 countries across the globe without obtaining a visa in advance, according to the latest update in global travel rankings.
The development represents a significant boost for Nigerians, easing travel restrictions and opening up more opportunities for tourism, business engagements, education, and family visits in various parts of the world.

Of the 45 destinations, 27 countries grant Nigerians full visa-free entry, while others provide simplified access through visa-on-arrival or Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) systems. Although entry requirements vary by country, the update signals improved international travel access for Nigerian citizens.
Many of the destinations are African countries that have adopted open-border policies aimed at promoting regional integration, enhancing trade, and strengthening tourism across the continent.
The Gambia has sustained a visa-free policy for African travellers since 2019, later extending the privilege to Commonwealth nations, European Union member states, and selected Baltic countries.
In the same year, Benin removed visa requirements for all African nationals, a policy inspired by Rwanda’s approach. This move has helped position Benin as a major commercial and transit hub in West Africa.
Kenya broadened its open-border initiative in October 2023 when President William Ruto announced the removal of visa requirements for visitors from across Africa. The policy was introduced to improve trade relations, boost tourism, and enhance continental connectivity.
Rwanda has also deepened its commitment to travel openness. Since November 2023, the country has allowed visa-free entry for all African travellers without charging any fees, further reinforcing its reputation as a leading destination for tourism and international conferences.
Ghana recently joined the list of African countries offering visa-free access to fellow Africans. The move is expected to attract increased investment, tourism, and business travel, while supporting Ghana’s ambition to become a regional economic hub.
Outside Africa, Nigerian passport holders can also access several countries through visa-free entry, visa-on-arrival, or eTA approval. These destinations include Barbados, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Chad, Cook Islands, Côte d’Ivoire, Dominica, Fiji, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Kiribati, Liberia, Mali, Micronesia, Montserrat, Niger, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo, and Vanuatu.
Overall, the expanded list underscores growing international mobility for Nigerians and reflects the continued efforts of many countries to encourage travel, trade, and cultural exchange.
