Nwaọgụ Takes Charge, Promises Fresh Direction for IPOB

Mazi Chris Nwaọgụ has officially accepted his appointment as Head of the 4th Administration of the Directorate of State (DOS) of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), pledging a renewed focus and strategic direction for the organisation.

His acceptance followed an announcement by IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently serving a prison sentence at the Sokoto Correctional Centre on terrorism-related charges.
Kanu announced the appointment of Nwaọgụ and other individuals into the group’s leadership structure on Wednesday as part of a broader internal reorganisation.
In a video made available to journalists on Thursday, Nwaọgụ confirmed his acceptance of the position, describing the appointment as a “sacred mandate” and expressing gratitude to Kanu for the confidence reposed in him.
He stated that the new administration would prioritise efforts aimed at securing the release of Kanu and other detained members of the group, whom he described as “prisoners of conscience,” while also intensifying engagement on issues relating to self-determination.
Nwaọgụ further outlined plans to expand international advocacy efforts, particularly across Europe, the United States and other regions, with the aim of raising awareness about IPOB’s position and objectives.
He stressed the need to address what he described as misinformation about the organisation, noting that the new leadership would focus on structured communication and public engagement to enhance understanding of its activities and ideology.
According to him, the administration will place strong emphasis on unity, discipline and internal cohesion within the organisation, while warning against internal disputes and distractions that could undermine its goals.
Nwaọgụ also reaffirmed IPOB’s long-standing position that a referendum remains the most peaceful and democratic means of determining the political future of the Igbo people.
He maintained that the group remains committed to peaceful advocacy and structured engagement in pursuit of its objectives, adding that the freedom of Biafra represents, in his view, a broader struggle for justice and self-determination.
The new DOS head also acknowledged the contributions of the previous administration, commending its efforts and sacrifices. He added that details of the new leadership structure would be formally announced through the organisation’s official communication channels in due course.
