Olubadan clarifies refusal to shake Alaafin’s hand, says act was not disrespectful
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has dismissed claims circulating on social media that he intentionally snubbed the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, during an inter-faith programme held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
Addressing journalists in Ibadan, the traditional ruler described the allegation as a misunderstanding that had been blown out of proportion and wrongly portrayed online.
Oba Ladoja maintained that the incident was neither deliberate nor an act of disrespect, stressing that his conduct at the event was guided strictly by circumstance and protocol, not by any intention to slight a fellow monarch.
“There was absolutely no intention to disrespect anyone,” the Olubadan said. “What happened was not deliberate. Unfortunately, it has been misinterpreted, especially on social media.”
He explained that he arrived late at the gathering and tried to take his seat quietly so as not to interrupt ongoing proceedings. According to him, his movement inside the venue was influenced by the seating arrangement and the timing of his arrival.
“When I arrive late at an event, I try to be cautious. Just like in a mosque when prayers are ongoing, you wait until things are properly arranged before joining,” he explained. “I was only trying to get to my seat before anyone would say I should no longer move.”
The monarch further clarified that his designated seat was located between specific sections, requiring him to pass through certain areas of the hall. On returning, he observed that some dignitaries had already changed their positions, which compelled him to retrace his steps.
“My seat was between the Soun and the Alaafin. I had to pass through some people to get there. I never made any decision to avoid or ignore anyone. Why would I?” he asked.
Oba Ladoja expressed concern over what he described as deliberate mischief by some commentators, noting that short video clips shared online failed to capture the full sequence of events.
“If you watch the complete video, you will see that I greeted people, including the governor. But social media often takes things out of context,” he said.
On whether any effort had been made to address perceived grievances arising from the incident, the Olubadan said appropriate communication had already taken place, adding that there was no tension or offence between the traditional institutions involved.
“I do not believe anyone was offended, and I do not see the matter as an insult to anybody,” he stated.
Beyond the controversy, the Olubadan reiterated his commitment to unity, peace and societal development, particularly among younger generations.
“My concern is to unite the present generation and those coming after us. We must raise standards, especially in education, and focus on what truly drives progress in our society,” Oba Ladoja said.
