The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has described the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki as a shining light whose life was marked by integrity, compassion and selfless service to humanity.
The National Chairman of the party, Professor Sadiq Gombe, stated this during an evening of tributes organised by the SDP National Working Committee in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

Professor Gombe said the passing of Senator Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District in the 10th Senate, is a great loss not only to his family and the party, but to the nation as a whole.
According to him, the late senator earned respect across political, ethnic and religious lines due to his principled leadership, commitment to accountability and unwavering dedication to the welfare of his constituents.
He further disclosed that shortly before his death, Senator Akwashiki had expressed concerns about his deteriorating health and even contemplated stepping aside to allow for effective representation of his people, a move he described as a rare demonstration of patriotism and responsibility.
Professor Gombe prayed for Allah’s forgiveness and mercy for the late senator and asked God to grant his family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
Other speakers at the event, including political leaders, traditional rulers and party stakeholders, also paid glowing tributes, describing Senator Akwashiki as one of the most impactful lawmakers Nasarawa State has produced since 1999.
Senator Akwashiki died at the age of 52 in an Indian hospital.
He was first elected into the Senate in 2019 and was re-elected in 2023 on the platform of the SDP.
The programme concluded with prayers for peace, unity and progress in Nasarawa State and Nigeria at large.
