Fire Guts Borno IDPs Camps in Yobe
A fire outbreak has destroyed over 76 temporary shelters accommodating Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Ngamma village, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, in Northeast Nigeria.
Those affected are predominantly IDPs from neighbouring Borno State who sought refuge in the community after fleeing insecurity in their home areas.
In response to the incident, the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), acting on the directive of Governor Mai Mala Buni, visited the affected site to evaluate the level of damage caused by the fire.
Preliminary findings revealed that one individual sustained injuries and was admitted to hospital for treatment, while at least one household was completely razed by the inferno. Several other families suffered partial losses.
Beyond the destruction of shelters, the fire also consumed livestock and significant quantities of food items, further compounding the hardship faced by the already vulnerable displaced families.
Eyewitnesses and victims, many visibly distraught, recounted how they lost their personal belongings and means of livelihood, appealing to government authorities and humanitarian organisations for urgent intervention and relief assistance.
