Onanuga Clarifies Tinubu’s Brief Stumble During Turkey Visit
Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, has explained the circumstances surrounding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s brief loss of balance during an official engagement in Turkey, stating that the incident occurred after the President stepped on a metal object.
Onanuga addressed public concerns on Tuesday in Ankara following enquiries about the President’s health after a video of the moment circulated online. President Tinubu had momentarily missed his step while walking alongside Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the Turkish capital.
Earlier reports had indicated that the Nigerian leader briefly stumbled shortly after inspecting a guard of honour during the elaborate welcome ceremony organised by his Turkish hosts.
A review of the video footage showed that the President went down after a cameraman moved a tripod stand close to his walking path. However, Onanuga dismissed insinuations of any serious incident, emphasising that the moment was insignificant.
“The President stepped on a metal object on the floor, which caused him to momentarily lose his balance,” Onanuga explained. “This is not a big deal, except for those who want to make mischief out of a fleeting incident. It was a mere stumble, thank God, not a fall.”
