From Dooshima Terkura, Makurdi
Troops of Sector 1, Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have arrested three suspects found in possession of a pistol in Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State.
The arrest comes just days after gunmen attacked members of Awule community in the same local government area, resulting in the loss of lives.
The Force Commander, OPWS, Major General Moses Gara, disclosed that troops have continued to intensify operations aimed at ridding Benue State and adjoining areas of criminal elements threatening peace and stability.
According to him, “On 5 November 2025, troops on routine patrol along Otukpo–Enugu Road at Amoda Axis in Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State apprehended three suspected criminals found in possession of a locally made pistol and one cartridge.”
The suspects — identified as John Isaac, 22; Baba Emmanuel, 17; and Sunday Thomas, 19 — all residents of Otukpo Local Government Area, were intercepted while riding a motorcycle based on intelligence reports.
During the search, troops recovered three mobile phones and ₦20,200 from them. Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects were on their way to carry out a criminal act before being intercepted by the vigilant soldiers.
General Gara said the suspects are currently in custody for further investigation and appropriate action.
He commended the troops for their professionalism and swift action in averting a potential attack, urging them to sustain the momentum of operations and enhance surveillance to safeguard farmers and rural dwellers, especially during the ongoing harvest season.
In a statement signed by Acting Media Information Officer, OPWS, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, the Force Commander reaffirmed the operation’s commitment to sustaining peace and stability across Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba States, assuring residents of the military’s continuous dedication to protecting lives and property.
