PDP Will Sort Itself Out, Says Saraki in Response to Tinubu’s Remarks
By Iyojo Ameh
Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has responded to President Bola Tinubu’s Democracy Day remarks about the disarray in Nigeria’s opposition parties, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), acknowledging internal challenges within the party but expressing confidence that it will recover.
During his Democracy Day address at the National Assembly on Thursday, President Tinubu openly mocked the opposition’s current state, stating, “It is a joy to see the opposition in disarray. For me, I will not say, try your best to put your house in order. I will not help you to do so, either.”
Tinubu also dismissed allegations that his administration is seeking to impose a one-party state by encouraging mass defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Reacting shortly after the ceremony, Saraki conceded that the PDP has experienced internal turbulence but stressed that the party would “sort itself out.”
He called on members of the PDP and other opposition groups to focus on internal reorganization and self-correction, aligning with the President’s remarks that each political party must take responsibility for its own stability.
“I think we must take him at his words,” Saraki told journalists. “I mean, he spoke well, saying that he’s not for a one-party state. So we must take him at his word, and he supports a multi-party [democracy]. So we are all on the same page.”
The former Senate President added, “That’s why we are going around and bringing everybody to come around. So those who say they are under pressure, there is no pressure anymore. We’re all for multi-party [democracy], and everybody should get their house in order. As he said, he’s not going to help us, so we are going to sort our own house again.”
