SDP National Chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam, Criticizes PENGASSAN Strike, Labels It Sabotage Against Nigerians
The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, has faulted the decision of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) to embark on a nationwide strike, describing it as a reckless move that threatens Nigeria’s economy and the welfare of its citizens.
In a strongly worded statement on Sunday, Gabam condemned the union’s directive to halt operations in the oil and gas sector, especially its decision to target the Dangote Refinery. He argued that such action amounted to sabotage and risked plunging millions of Nigerians into untold hardship.
According to him, “The recent declaration by PENGASSAN to embark on a nationwide strike, effectively shutting down the oil and gas sector, is a reprehensible act of sabotage against the Nigerian people. By targeting the Dangote Refinery and directing members to withdraw their services, PENGASSAN is not only threatening the stability of the oil and gas sector but also endangering the livelihoods of millions of Nigerians.”
He warned that the phased shutdown, including the suspension of supplies to the refinery, would inevitably trigger fuel shortages, soaring prices, and potential nationwide instability.
Alhaji Gabam urged Nigerians to reject what he described as “an attempt to hold the nation hostage,” stressing that the union’s demands appeared self-serving and ran contrary to national interest.
According to him, “I reject the union’s demands, as reflected in the directive to target the Dangote Refinery, which seems driven by a desire to undermine the progress made by the Nigerian government in the oil and gas sector. The government must remain resolute and resist any attempts to use industrial action as a tool for extortion or to destabilize the economy.”
Expressing solidarity with the federal government, the SDP chairman emphasized that the nation’s economic development should not be derailed by selfish motives.
“I stand with the Nigerian government in its efforts to promote economic growth and development,” Gabam stated. “I urge all Nigerians to remain vigilant and united in the face of this challenge, while rejecting any attempt to destabilize the economy or obstruct national progress.”
Gabam’s remarks come amid rising concerns over the potential impact of the planned strike on energy supply, businesses, and households across the country.
