Lawmakers in the Nigerian Senate have called for fairness in the implementation of the presidential directive ordering the withdrawal of police officers attached to very important personalities (VIPs) across the country.

The senators, who expressed dissatisfaction with the withdrawal of their police orderlies, urged the Nigeria Police Force to ensure that the directive is enforced uniformly. They insisted it should also apply to state governors, ministers, heads of government agencies, and other influential individuals.

During Wednesday’s plenary, Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi Central, raised a point of order drawing the Senate’s attention to the withdrawal of his only police orderly. He lamented that while lawmakers were affected, other public officials continued to retain their full security details.

Deputy Senate President Jubrin Barau, who presided over the session, also expressed concern. He noted that while the directive was strictly implemented for members of the legislature, it had not been extended to members of the executive arm or privileged businesspersons who still enjoyed police protection.

Barau informed the Senate that the matter had already been escalated to the appropriate authorities and assured lawmakers that justice would be served.
