The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, the Chief Imam of Yelwa, Gindin Akwati, in Plateau State.
Imam Abdullahi rose to national and international prominence for his extraordinary courage in 2018, when he sheltered and rescued about 300 Christians from armed attackers, an act widely celebrated as a powerful demonstration of selflessness and commitment to peaceful coexistence.

In a condolence message, Speaker Abbas commended the late Imam’s bravery and compassion, describing his action as a true reflection of the essence of Islam and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), particularly on tolerance, mutual respect, and love for humanity. He noted that the Imam stood out as a distinguished ambassador of Islam and a patriotic Nigerian who placed humanity above ethnic and religious differences.
The Speaker conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, as well as to the Muslim and Christian communities, praying that Almighty Allah grants the late Imam eternal rest in Jannatul Firdausi.
Imam Abdullahi’s heroism earned him global recognition, including the 2019 International Religious Freedom Award bestowed by the United States Government, in honour of his courageous and life-saving intervention.
