The Spirit of Herodias
By Dr jalarth Uche Opara
Yesterday, 24th of June, was the feast of St. John the Baptist — a man rare and unique in his birth, unusual in his lifestyle, and profoundly fearless in his preaching.
He was a voice that refused to be silenced. He confronted sin without compromise and spoke truth even when it challenged the powerful.
Sadly, the same human weaknesses that contributed to his death remain struggles for many today — the inability to master desire, pride, and temptation.
John the Baptist spoke against adultery without fear. Herod, lacking the discipline to control his emotions and blinded by the attraction of a sinful desire, allowed himself to become an instrument of destruction.
The voice of a prophet was silenced, and his head placed on a platter as a trophy of a corrupted desire.
There is a danger when a person becomes trapped in the waters of uncontrolled passion.
Judgment becomes clouded, values are weakened, and decisions are made under influences that one may later regret.
The “spirit of Herodias” is a symbol of manipulation, unhealthy influence, and the power of destructive desires over human judgment. Many people today, like Herod, are pressured into actions they would ordinarily reject.
Like John the Baptist, many voices within families and relationships are silenced when truth becomes uncomfortable — peace, love, and companionship suffer when honesty is punished.
To families blessed with partners who choose wisdom, loyalty, peace, and integrity: celebrate them.
A home free from the spirit of Herodias is a home where love, truth, and respect can flourish.
