Three members of a family lost their lives in a road accident in the early hours of Thursday, January 1, while returning from crossover night prayers in Rivers State.
According to residents, the victims were heading home to Rumuokini, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, when their vehicle collided with a stationary sewage truck on the Obiri Ikwerre flyover.

Those who died include the father, Mr. Ahmed, his five-year-old daughter, Sheila, and his brother, Azeez. The vehicle was reportedly driven by Ahmed’s first son, a fashion designer, who sustained life-threatening injuries along with other passengers. They are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the accident, stating that two people died on the spot while the injured were rushed to the hospital. Investigations have begun to determine the cause of the crash.
The family has blamed the incident on the alleged indiscriminate parking of the waste collection truck on the flyover. Ahmed’s brother, Engr. Amoo Muideen Ajiboye, told journalists that the truck was parked without any caution signs, contrary to safety standards.
He said, “It is so unfortunate that the waste collection truck parked at Obiri Ikwerre flyover caused this accident, which claimed the lives of Ahmed, his daughter Sheila, and his brother Azeez. Other occupants of the vehicle are still unconscious in the hospital.
“We appeal to the government to investigate this matter thoroughly. Waste management agencies should ensure their contractors follow proper safety protocols to prevent further tragedies.”
