UNIDOP 2025: Retired Military Officers Advocate Policy for Older Persons as COSROPIN Hosts Golf Tournament for Veterans
By our Correspondent
The Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria (COSROPIN), in collaboration with the TYB International Golf Resort and Country Club, Yar’Adua Barracks, Abuja, has organized a special golf tournament for veterans, with special recognition given to members aged 80 years and above.
The event formed part of activities marking the 2025 United Nations International Day of Older Persons (UNIDOP).
Speaking during the tournament, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Retired Major General Charley Ogbonnaya Okoro, called on the Federal Government to formulate a policy that ensures the welfare of older persons across the country.
He also urged the establishment of Old People’s Homes to address the growing challenges faced by elderly citizens, describing them as valuable assets whose wealth of experience should be harnessed for national development.
In his remarks, the Captain of TYB International Golf Resort and Country Club, Major General Samson Jiya, said the tournament was organized to honor veterans for their contributions to nation-building.
Expressing concern over the welfare of some retired officers, Major General Jiya emphasized the need for improved welfare packages, especially in healthcare, to enhance their living conditions. He commended COSROPIN for its consistent advocacy on issues affecting older persons nationwide.
Earlier, the President of COSROPIN, Senator Eze Ajoku, commended the Club for its partnership with the Coalition in commemorating this year’s UNIDOP. He also called for a legal framework to improve the living standards of older persons, including the establishment of a health insurance scheme tailored to their needs.
According to him, COSROPIN is currently sponsoring a Bill before the National Assembly on the welfare of older persons and seeks the support of President Bola Tinubu to ensure its passage into law.
Highlights of the event included the presentation of prizes to winners and special recognition for Senator Eze Ajoku and former JAMB Registrar, Professor Dibu Ojerinde—one of the veterans above 80 years who still actively plays golf.
