“You’d Be Speaking German and a Little Japanese If Not for Us,” Trump Tells World Leaders at Davos
US President Donald Trump has claimed that German and a little Japanese would have become the world’s dominant languages if the United States had not intervened during World War II.
Trump made the remark on Wednesday while addressing global leaders at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, where he told European leaders that the US played a decisive role in winning the war.
“Without us right now, you would all be speaking German and a little Japanese,” Trump said.
Before making the statement, the US president revisited his long-standing interest in Greenland, referencing events from World War II.
According to Trump, Denmark was unable to defend itself or Greenland when it fell to Germany after only a few hours of fighting, leaving the United States with no choice but to step in.
“Denmark fell to Germany after just six hours of fighting and was totally unable to defend either itself or Greenland. So the United States was then compelled, and we did it,” he said.
Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the post-war decision by the US to return Greenland to Denmark, describing it as a mistake.
“After the war, we gave Greenland back to Denmark. How stupid were we to do that? But we did it. And now, how ungrateful are they?” he asked.
He further warned that the world is facing greater risks today than ever before, citing the proliferation of missiles and nuclear weapons.
“So now our country and the world face much greater risks than ever before, because of missiles and nuclear weapons of warfare that I can’t even talk about,” Trump said.
The US president added that he was seeking immediate negotiations to reopen discussions on the acquisition of Greenland by the United States, while ruling out the use of force.
