By Iyojo Ameh
The Young Progressive Party (YPP) in Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory has held what it described as a “free, fair and credible” primary election to select its candidates for the forthcoming council elections.
Speaking during the event on Monday, the Chairman of YPP in Gwagwalada, Comrade Mayor Samuel, said the party was determined to “teach Nigeria and Nigerians what true governance is by showing them the real way.”

“We have just conducted the most credible, most adjudged, free and fair primary in this political era. The best candidate has emerged today, and not just with the people’s support, but with God’s anointing,” he said.
He thanked security agencies and INEC officials for ensuring a peaceful process and urged party members to remain focused ahead of the election.

“As we leave here, don’t be surprised to see cultural dances and people jubilating, because the people have spoken. This is just the first step. The next is our door-to-door mobilisation,” Samuel added.
The party’s chairmanship candidate, Hon. Attahiru Shehu Ibrahim, promised to prioritise security, education, women empowerment, and grassroots development if elected.

“I have observed that Gwagwalada is lagging behind among the six area councils in the FCT. I will work closely with security agencies to improve safety. I will also empower women who want to do business but lack the means, and ensure access to quality primary health care,” he said.
On maternal health, he pledged to deploy qualified doctors to rural health centers so that women and children, especially those who cannot afford private hospitals, will have access to proper care. He promised also to empower farmers in the grassroots to ensure food security.

Among the standout candidates who emerged during the primaries is Ibitomi Christiana Abose, the only female candidate who clinched the party’s ticket for councillor representing Gwako Ward.
Abose, who is campaigning on a platform of education, health, and support for farmers, said her focus is on helping the less privileged.
“There will be provisions to support children from low-income homes to access quality education, and we’ll also prioritize pregnant women and children in our healthcare agenda. Farmers will get access to fertilizers and other inputs to boost productivity,” she said.
On her experience as the only female contestant, she admitted the journey was not easy but expressed confidence in her ability to compete and win.
“It’s challenging being the only woman among men, but with God, I’m still standing strong—and I know I’ll beat them,” she declared confidently.
Engineer Jonathan Emmanuel, a party member who witnessed the primaries, praised the process and expressed optimism that the selected candidates would deliver if elected.
“With the kind of credible process we witnessed today and the calibre of candidates, we are hopeful of a positive outcome. The YPP is showing that it is ready to lead,” he said.
The primaries were conducted under tight security, with officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) present to monitor the process.
