2027: Anglican Church Raises Alarm Over Premature Political Campaigns
By our Correspondent
The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has urged the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, to take decisive steps to stop premature political campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Church expressed concern that early politicking is diverting the attention of public office holders from addressing pressing national challenges, particularly the growing insecurity across the country.
President of the Anglican Mothers’ Union and Women’s Guild, Mrs. Angela Ndukuba, made the call during the 26th Annual Diocesan Women’s Conference, themed “The Unchangeable Promises of God: The Covenant Keeping God,” held in Abuja.
“It is surprising that our politicians at all levels are already engaging in the 2027 electoral campaign even before their second anniversary in office,” she said, urging INEC to call such politicians to order and ensure strict adherence to electoral guidelines.

While congratulating the new INEC Chairman, Mrs. Ndukuba assured that the Church would continue to pray for him to bring integrity and sanity to Nigeria’s electoral process.
Addressing the ongoing Farmer-Herder conflict, Mrs. Ndukuba lamented its devastating impact on women, noting that many are now afraid to go to their farms for fear of being attacked, raped, or even killed.
She condemned the destruction of farmlands by cattle, describing it as “a wicked act,” and linked the clashes to the growing food scarcity in the country.
According to her, in some areas, herders have taken over ancestral lands, forcing indigenous residents into Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps despite the absence of a civil war.
Commending the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for visible improvements within the city center, Mrs. Ndukuba appealed for similar attention to be given to rural roads across the six area councils.
Amidst her reflections on national issues, she encouraged women to remain steadfast in faith and hold on to God’s promises, even in difficult times.
