2027: Zoning Will Deepen Unity, Fairness, Discourage Mediocrity in Electoral System — Maikaya, APC Guber Aspirant Hails Nasarawa Leaders Over Arrangement
By David Odama
A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State, Alhaji Mohammed Maikaya, has commended Governor Abdullahi Sule, former APC National Chairman Senator Abdullahi Adamu, former Governor Senator Tanko Almakura, and other key stakeholders for entrenching the zoning system in the state’s political arrangement.
Maikaya said the zoning system has helped to harmonise the people of the state, while institutionalising unity, fairness, and strengthening democracy among citizens and political actors.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja at the weekend, the APC governorship aspirant explained that the zoning arrangement initiated during the administration of former Governor, Senator Tanko Almakura, has significantly contributed to the stabilisation of democracy in Nasarawa State.
He noted that the decisive roles played by the former APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, and sustained by the incumbent Governor, Engineer Abdullahi Sule—who has continued to advocate for the continuity of the system—should be preserved for the overall interest of the state.
Maikaya maintained that zoning would minimise political tension in Nasarawa State, create room for healthy and harmonious political competition, and foster a conducive political environment for elections without bitterness or acrimony among candidates of various political parties.
According to him, “It is much easier for everyone to view the arrangement from all perspectives and agree that those favoured by the system should be allowed to produce the governor, rather than candidates from other zones pushing for contests where political leaders and critical stakeholders have already eased the process through zoning.”
He stressed that the governorship position should not be pursued on impulse, adding that elections should be anchored on morality and tangible contributions made to the people.
Maikaya, who is the Chief Executive Officer of the Maikaya Foundation—a humanitarian organisation—said his foundation has been actively involved in training vulnerable persons in Nasarawa State. He added that the foundation has supported over 250 students and awarded scholarships to about 600 students in tertiary institutions across the state, with another batch of beneficiaries expected soon.
