No fewer than 1,094 have registered for voluntary repatriation from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks, a significant increase from the 130 individuals who had earlier indicated interest in returning home.

The spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, disclosed on Friday that a joint screening exercise involving officials from Nigeria and South Africa is currently underway to determine those eligible for repatriation.

According to Ebienfa, the screening process, which includes officials from both countries as well as South African immigration and police authorities, is expected to be completed on Saturday. He explained that only those who successfully pass the screening will be approved for repatriation, after which the final number of returnees and flight arrangements will be determined.
He further revealed that South African authorities have agreed to waive penalties associated with immigration violations such as visa overstays. However, individuals facing criminal charges will not qualify for repatriation.
Ebienfa noted that although Nigeria submitted its list for clearance ahead of Ghana, South African authorities prioritized Ghana’s process. He added that Ethiopia is next in line after Nigeria, while logistics for the repatriation exercise will be finalized upon completion of the screening.
Nigeria has continued to condemn acts of violence against its citizens in South Africa, including the deaths of two Nigerians reportedly assaulted by security officials.
