The former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, has raised alarm over the future of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning that the party could collapse before the 2027 general elections if urgent steps are not taken to address its internal crisis.

Speaking during an appearance on The Morning Show on Arise Television on Tuesday, Senator Suswam described the PDP as being in a “critical condition” and likened it to a patient in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

“Is the PDP in the hospital? Yes. Is it in the ICU to some extent? Yes, it is. Can it be rescued? Yes, if the proper medicine is applied,” he said.

The former governor pointed to deepening internal divisions, including the ongoing dispute over the party’s national secretary position and recent waves of defections at both state and federal levels, as signs of the party’s deteriorating condition.

“A lot of people are hanging on, waiting to see the ultimate end of this party,” Suswam added, emphasizing that many loyalists have already lost faith in the PDP’s ability to recover.

Suswam, however, expressed cautious optimism over ongoing reconciliation efforts being led by former Senate President Bukola Saraki, who is working with PDP governors and former governors to salvage the party.

“Whether there is light at the end of the tunnel in the efforts made by Senator Saraki will be seen in the next two weeks,” he noted. “If this initiative fails, the party may not survive.”

The PDP, which once dominated Nigerian politics for 16 years, has struggled with internal wrangling and a shrinking support base since losing power at the federal level in 2015.

Political observers say the coming months will be crucial for the party as it prepares to reposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
