Today, 19th July, millions of football lovers across the world will gather both inside the stadium and before television screens and mobile devices to watch Argentina and Spain lock horns, lace up their boots, and bring to bear their finest skills and expertise in pursuit of the most coveted trophy in world football.

It has been an exciting tournament. Beautiful football, breathtaking skill displays, and stunning hat-tricks have thrilled fans. Hearts have been broken, expectations shattered, and countless predictions buried.

Such is the beauty and unpredictability of football. It pays little respect to experience, laughs at history, and humbles even the most confident analysts. Bet on the outcome of a football match at your own peril.

Today’s final has generated an avalanche of predictions and analysis. I dare say, with all confidence, that 99% of those predictions will evaporate like steam, just as many have done since the tournament began.
