NUJ FCT Council Mourns the Passing of Veteran Journalist, Dr. Leon Usigbe

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has announced with profound sadness the sudden death of veteran journalist, Dr.

Leon Usigbe, who passed away on Friday, July 25, 2025, after a brief illness.

According to the statement Dr.

Usigbe was first admitted to the State House Clinic but was later transferred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), where he eventually died.

A native of Uromi in Edo State, Dr. Usigbe had a distinguished journalism career spanning decades. He began his reporting journey with Vanguard Newspaper, covering critical beats in Katsina, Kaduna, and Abuja, including the House of Representatives.

He later served as the Media Aide to former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Masari, before returning to Vanguard. Eventually, he joined the Nigerian Tribune in Abuja, rising to the position of Bureau Chief. At Tribune, he covered the State House and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

A consummate professional and passionate journalist, Dr. Usigbe was known for his integrity, depth of reporting, and unwavering commitment to the ethics of the profession. His dedication to truth-telling, giving voice to the voiceless, and upholding journalistic standards earned him widespread respect and admiration.

His death is a painful loss to the media fraternity, especially at a time when the press plays a pivotal role in fostering peace, democracy, and accountability in the country.
