Akpabio Urges Nigerians to Safeguard Government Facilities in Their Communities
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has called on Nigerians to take responsibility for maintaining and protecting government facilities within their communities.
Akpabio made the appeal on Tuesday while commissioning projects in Ika Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Jackson Udom, the Senate President emphasized that his role in the National Assembly is to facilitate the delivery of projects requested by the people, while citizens have a duty to safeguard them.
“My duty as your representative in the Senate is to ensure that I bring projects that you ask for, in the overall interest of the people. You, as beneficiaries, owe government a duty to protect these facilities so that they won’t be vandalized or destroyed by enemies of progress. In other words, I want communities to own these projects, and by doing so, governments at all levels will be encouraged to do more,” he said.
Akpabio further noted that vandalizing government-owned facilities is equivalent to destroying personal property.
“If you say, after all, it is government property, let us vandalize it—are we not all government? That means you are also destroying your own property and, in the process, discouraging government from doing more for your community,” he added.
Reassuring his constituents, the Senate President restated the commitment of the Bola Tinubu-led administration to deliver the dividends of democracy across the country.
“This current administration of President Bola Tinubu is people-oriented and determined to make life easier, especially for ordinary Nigerians. The President recently approved the financial empowerment of 1,000 citizens from every ward nationwide to strengthen economic opportunities at the grassroots,” he explained.
Earlier, a community leader and member of the National Communication Commission (NCC), Chris Okorie, pledged continued support for President Bola Tinubu, Senator Akpabio, and Governor Umo Eno, assuring their return to office.
Some of the projects commissioned by Akpabio include an eight-classroom block and an ICT Centre at St. Augustine Secondary School in Ika Local Government Area, a 12-classroom block at Community Secondary School, and an ultra-modern market in Uruk-Ata 2, Etim Ekpo Local Government Area.
