The Idoma Area Traditional Council on Wednesday announced the suspension of Chieftaincy title conferments across all Intermediate Area Councils in Idoma land with immediate effect.

The decision was contained in a statement signed by the Council’s Secretary, Adegbe Uloko, on behalf of the Och’Idoma Agaba-Idu, Dr.

Elaigwu Odogbo John, who is also President of the Idoma Area Traditional Council and Vice Chairman of the Benue State Council of Traditional Rulers.

The suspension affects councils in Apa/Agatu, Otukpo/Ohimini, Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo, and Oju/Obi.

According to the statement, the move is intended to regulate and safeguard the conferment of titles, curb indiscriminate proliferation, and uphold the sanctity of the traditional institution.

It further warned that any title conferred in violation of the directive would be considered null and void, adding that offenders risk additional traditional and legal sanctions.

Reaffirming its commitment to preserving the integrity and heritage of Chieftaincy titles, the Council stressed that such honours must continue to embody dignity, service, and cultural value, and can only be conferred through lawful authority and due process.

The statement cited Part II, Section 7(d) of the Chieftaincy Law of 2016 (as amended), which mandates that all conferments receive prior approval from the Paramount Ruler and the respective Area Traditional Council.
