Kanu’s Lawyer Accuses DSS of Deception Over His Health, Demands Full Disclosure

The legal counsel to detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has accused the Department of State Services (DSS) of deliberately spreading falsehoods about his client’s health and subjecting him to inadequate medical care.

In a strongly worded statement on Thursday, Onyedikachi Ifedi, Esq., dismissed recent media reports—particularly those citing DSS sources in The Nation newspaper—claiming Kanu’s health condition was being exaggerated. He described such reports as part of a wider campaign by the DSS to “malign our client and misinform the public.”

“The facts are clear: the DSS has been playing hide-and-seek with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s health,” Ifedi said. “Despite being present during his medical examinations, the DSS suddenly introduced one Dr. Nasiru Mohammed, a man with questionable credentials and no proven competence in handling life-threatening cardiovascular issues.”

Ifedi alleged that the doctor, reportedly from Daura in Katsina State, was “catapulted from obscurity into Kanu’s medical matter” for political purposes.

“This quack doctor has no clue about the dangers of potassium depletion in the bloodstream, a condition threatening our client’s life,” he claimed.

The lawyer also questioned why the DSS sent Kanu’s blood samples to South Africa for analysis if, as it maintains, his health was not critical.

“If the DSS has nothing to hide, why won’t it release the full and unedited test results?” he asked. “Instead, like a petty thief, it resorts to lies and media distractions.”

According to Ifedi, the DSS lacks the expertise to manage Kanu’s complex health issues.

“A security agency that cannot grasp the implications of aortic valve regurgitation or congestive heart failure has no business handling the healthcare of a man whose life is already endangered by their reckless detention,” he argued.

Challenging the DSS to prove its claims, Ifedi demanded transparency.

“We challenge the DSS to hold an open press conference where independent journalists and medical experts can freely question them on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s health. If they are confident, let them submit to public scrutiny,” he said.

He further accused the DSS of pressuring doctors to alter medical reports to fit its narrative in court.

“The DSS’s modus operandi is to intimidate doctors into downplaying their findings, deceiving the courts into believing Kanu is fine. Sadly, many Abuja-based courts, biased against the Igbo, often oblige them without hesitation,” he stated.

The lawyer concluded with a warning that Kanu’s legal team would continue to expose what it described as “lies, concealment, and medical quackery” by the DSS.

“The health and life of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu are not pawns in the DSS’s propaganda war. We will keep exposing every falsehood and hold the DSS accountable before Nigerians and the international community,” Ifedi vowed.
