Former Governor of Abia State and Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has expressed concern over the rising insecurity across the country, including incidents of kidnapping, killings, and attacks in various regions.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Senator Kalu cautioned against politicising sensitive national matters, particularly those relating to security and the judiciary, as political realignments begin to take shape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Commenting on renewed calls for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Kalu advised against making public statements on a matter still pending in court. “You know this case is before a court of competent jurisdiction. It’s not right for me to start airing my opinion without knowing the position of the court or that of the President. The President is watching the judiciary closely,” he said.

The senator revealed that he had discussed the issue with the President several times but declined to share details of their conversations. “It’s a privilege for me to have spoken to the President. What matters is that everyone wants a peaceful resolution,” he added.

Emphasising his respect for the judiciary, Kalu urged Nigerians to allow the courts to conclude their work before making judgments. “All of us are engaging in what I call backdoor diplomacy because of the respect I have for the judiciary. We must not make Justice Nyako or any judge look like a fool by debating this case publicly. Nigerians must respect court decisions,” he said.

Kalu further noted that only the Attorney-General of the Federation has the constitutional authority to discontinue such a case. “The proper process of discontinuing a case lies with the Attorney-General, not with people shouting on television or in their homes,” he explained, calling for calm and adherence to due process.

The senator expressed optimism that a lawful and peaceful resolution of the matter would help restore peace and unity in the South-East region. “My position is that the matter should be resolved amicably after the judiciary has made its pronouncement. If handled properly, it will bring lasting peace to the South-East and to Nigeria as a whole,” he concluded.
