In a bid to enhance waste management in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) has constructed major sewage treatment facilities and other waste management infrastructure across parts of the nation’s capital.

The outgoing Director of AEPB, Engr.

Osilama Braimah, disclosed this during a Pull-Out Parade organized in his honour by the Board’s Enforcement Squad to mark his retirement in Abuja.

Engr. Braimah noted that a major sewage treatment plant and other critical facilities were established during his tenure to advance Abuja’s status as a first-class city with a modern and efficient waste management system.

“As young officers when we came into service 35 years ago, many of the facilities we have today were not in existence. For instance, the major waste treatment plant we now have was built while I was in service. We also constructed sewage treatment infrastructure in Katampe and Guzape, and relocated the solid waste dump site from Mpape to Gosa. All these efforts were aimed at building a first-class city with effective waste management,” he said.

The outgoing AEPB Director further commended the FCT Administration’s efforts under the leadership of Minister Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, noting that the new road networks have greatly improved the Board’s operations.

“With the new road infrastructure provided by the current FCT Minister, AEPB’s operations have been significantly enhanced. Our waste conveyance trucks now access areas that were previously difficult to reach. Abuja is a rapidly growing city that can now compete with other modern cities across the world,” Braimah stated.

He also expressed optimism that the ongoing procurement contracts would revolutionize waste management in the territory, as obsolete equipment would be replaced and new ones procured to ensure a cleaner and more sustainable capital city.

While commending the AEPB Enforcement Squad for organizing the Pull-Out Parade, Engr. Braimah urged staff to extend their full support to his successor in order to sustain and build upon the achievements recorded by the Board.

“I appeal to all staff and management of AEPB to give my successor maximum cooperation and support. This work is enormous and cannot be done by one person alone; it requires collective effort to achieve the Board’s mandate,” he emphasized.

Engr. Braimah, who retired after 35 years of meritorious service, was presented with a special plaque by the management staff of AEPB in recognition of his contributions to the development of environmental protection in the FCT.
