Pope Leo Reacts to Kwara Attacks, Urges Nigerian Authorities to Act
Pope Leo XIV on Monday condemned recent violent attacks in Nigeria, expressing sorrow over the loss of lives and calling on authorities to safeguard citizens.
In a message shared on his official X account, the Pope said he received news of the attacks with “sorrow and concern,” noting that multiple communities had been targeted.
He expressed solidarity with victims of violence and terrorism. The comments come amid heightened insecurity in Kwara State, where gunmen attacked Woro and Nuku villages.
Police and Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq confirmed that at least 75 people were killed, though residents claim more than 200 may have died.
Homes and other properties were destroyed during the attacks, according to survivors.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has since deployed additional troops to Kwara State and declared a nationwide security emergency.
