The Edo State Government has stepped up its clampdown on illicit drug activities, arresting seven individuals — including a breastfeeding mother — during a coordinated anti-drug operation carried out across Uromi, Ubiaja, and Auchi in Edo Central and Edo North Senatorial Districts.

The suspects, made up of three men and four women, were paraded in Benin City by the Edo State Taskforce.

The Commissioner for Public Safety and Security, Hon. Festus Ebea, revealed that the arrests were the result of credible intelligence and carefully planned raids on notorious drug hotspots.

He noted that a range of illicit substances were seized during the operation, serving as clear evidence of the suspects’ involvement in the sale and distribution of hard drugs.

According to Hon. Ebea, the operation took place on November 26, 2025, and was carried out by the Edo State Taskforce set up to maintain a crime-free environment across the state.

“Our youths are increasingly falling victim to drug abuse, which is driving deviant behaviour and crime. The raids were conducted in Esan North-East, Esan South-East, and Etsako West, where seven suspects — including a breastfeeding mother — were apprehended,” he said.

He added that all recovered evidence directly linked the suspects to the trafficking of harmful substances contributing to rising antisocial conduct.

Hon. Ebea emphasized the government’s resolve to break drug cartels, strengthen public safety, and shield young people from the destructive effects of narcotics. He stated that the suspects would be profiled and handed over to relevant authorities for prosecution.

“This operation will continue. It is not a one-time exercise. The Edo State Government will keep flushing out drug dealers and criminals wherever they hide to ensure peace and safety,” he assured.

The Commissioner reiterated Governor Monday Okpebholo’s directive to eliminate drug abuse in Edo State, stressing that narcotics ruin lives and jeopardize communities. “The impact of this Taskforce will be significant. We will confront both sellers and users wherever they may be,” he said.

CSP Michael Anetor, Chairman of the Edo State Taskforce, reaffirmed the team’s commitment to eliminating drug-related offences across the state. He expressed gratitude to the Commissioner for his steadfast support and warned others involved in drug trafficking to desist before they are apprehended.

The Edo State Government emphasized that the crackdown will be sustained until every community is secure, peaceful, and free from the scourge of illicit drugs.
