Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar Badaru, has tendered his resignation.

His exit comes at a time the nation is grappling with escalating cases of kidnapping and terrorist attacks. Badaru, who hails from Jigawa State, was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on August 21, 2023, and his resignation takes immediate effect.

The former minister personally submitted his resignation letter to President Tinubu on Monday, citing health challenges as the reason for stepping down.

His resignation was later confirmed in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to him, President Tinubu has accepted Badaru’s decision to leave office and is expected to announce his replacement within the week.

Onanuga added: “President Tinubu will likely inform the Senate of Badaru’s successor later this week.”

Badaru’s departure comes shortly after President Tinubu declared a national security emergency, with plans to provide further details on the strategy soon.
