Uncertainty continues to surround Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualification hopes following the delay by FIFA in issuing a decision on the protest filed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) against the DR Congo national football team.
The NFF had formally challenged the alleged fielding of ineligible players during the CAF World Cup playoffs, a tie that the Nigeria national football team narrowly lost on penalties.

Weeks after reports emerged that a FIFA panel had convened to review the complaint, there has been no official communication on the outcome.
The delay has sparked concern among stakeholders and supporters, especially as the Super Eagles are preparing to compete in a Four-Nation Invitational Tournament in Amman, Jordan, during the upcoming FIFA international window.
The tournament will feature the host Jordan national football team, alongside the Iran national football team and the Costa Rica national football team.
Significantly, the competition coincides with the Intercontinental World Cup playoffs — a situation that could reshape Nigeria’s immediate football schedule depending on FIFA’s verdict.
Sports analysts note that while the NFF’s decision to proceed with preparations reflects strategic foresight, FIFA’s continued silence has heightened speculation and unease within the football community.
If Nigeria’s appeal is upheld, the Super Eagles would advance to the Intercontinental playoff slated to be held in Mexico, which may rule them out of participation in the Jordan invitational tournament. Conversely, if the appeal is dismissed, the team will continue its preparations without disruption.
As anticipation builds across the football world, stakeholders have urged FIFA to provide timely clarification to enable proper planning and prevent logistical complications.
The NFF maintains its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s football interests while simultaneously preparing for upcoming international engagements.
