The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed as false and malicious claims circulating on social media alleging that its Chairman, Prof.

Joash Amupitan (SAN), endorsed a partisan post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

In a press statement issued in Abuja and signed by the Chief Press Secretary/Media Adviser to the Chairman, Adedayo Oketola, the Commission described the allegation as a “total fabrication” and a coordinated attempt to undermine the credibility of its leadership.

INEC stated categorically that the Chairman does not own or operate any personal account on X, and has never engaged in partisan commentary or aligned himself with any political activity in either his private or official capacity.

The Commission said the viral post was a deliberate effort to damage the Chairman’s reputation at a critical time when INEC is focused on electoral reforms and preparations for upcoming elections.

It also raised concerns over the activities of cybercriminals who have allegedly created fake social media accounts in the Chairman’s name to mislead and defraud members of the public. According to the statement, several such accounts have previously been identified and reported to security agencies.

INEC warned that it is working closely with law enforcement and cyber-intelligence units to track down those responsible for the misinformation and identity theft, stressing that offenders would face prosecution under the Cybercrimes Act.

The Commission urged Nigerians to disregard the false claims and rely only on verified institutional channels for official information.

INEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections, stating that it remains focused and undeterred by attempts to distract or discredit its leadership.
