Beautiful Beginning Academy Wins NUJ FCT 2026 Media Literacy Quiz Competition

Beautiful Beginning Academy, Abuja, has emerged winner of the 2026 Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Secondary School Media Literacy Quiz Competition organised to promote journalism, media education, and press clubs among students.

The competition, held on Thursday in Abuja, featured four secondary schools, including Government Senior Secondary School (GSS) Garki, GSS Gwarimpa, Cedar Hall Academy Lugbe, and Beautiful Beginning Academy.

Beautiful Beginning Academy clinched victory after defeating Cedar Hall Academy 8–6 in a tense tie breaker following a deadlock at the end of the second round, where both schools scored 205 points each.

At the end of the first round, GSS Garki recorded 70 points, GSS Gwarimpa scored 80 points, Cedar Hall Academy posted 95 points, while Beautiful Beginning Academy led with 115 points.

In the second round, GSS Garki scored 40 points, GSS Gwarimpa had 80 points, Cedar Hall Academy recorded 110 points, while Beautiful Beginning Academy secured 90 points, resulting in a tie that was eventually decided through a tie breaker.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Ms. Grace Ike, said the competition was organised to revive press clubs in schools and expose students to media literacy and journalism education.

She commended all participating schools for their performance and encouraged teachers to sustain press club activities within their schools.

“Teachers, please organise your press clubs and, once in a while, host events and invite the NUJ FCT Council, we will come,” she said.

Ike noted that the initiative would help strengthen mentorship, media literacy, and community engagement among students across the Federal Capital Territory.

“The NUJ FCT Council will continue to create opportunities that empower young people and promote educational and media related activities within our schools,” she added.

Earlier, the Vice Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council and Coordinator of Press Clubs, Yahaya Ndambabo, described the programme as part of the council’s broader commitment to promoting journalism, responsible communication, and intellectual development among young people.

According to him, press clubs remain important platforms for developing critical thinking, leadership abilities, communication skills, and public speaking confidence among students.
“The NUJ FCT Council remains passionate about strengthening press clubs in our schools,” Ndambabo said.

“Through these clubs, students are encouraged to develop critical thinking, communication skills, confidence, leadership qualities, and an interest in journalism and public affairs.”
Representatives of the Secondary Education Board, teachers, and other stakeholders attended the event.

Some participating students described the competition as educational and innovative, noting that it was the first media literacy quiz of its kind they had participated in.

The event ended with the presentation of awards and cash prizes to the winning schools by the NUJ FCT Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike.
