NiMet, Singapore Partner on AI-Powered Weather Forecasting, Aviation Research
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Singapore’s Meteorological Service (MSS) have moved to deepen collaboration in artificial intelligence-driven weather forecasting and aviation research as part of efforts to improve meteorological services and operational efficiency.
Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Charles Anosike, advanced the initiative during a high-level meeting with MSS Director-General, Koh Li-Na, on the sidelines of Ecosperity Week 2026 in Singapore.
The discussions centred on strategic cooperation in the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to weather forecasting, climate services, and aviation operations.
Both officials acknowledged the similarities in tropical weather conditions experienced by Nigeria and Singapore, stressing the critical role of meteorological services in supporting safe and efficient aviation systems.
The proposed partnership is expected to accelerate the evaluation and integration of AI models into meteorological operations, with the aim of improving the speed, precision, and localisation of weather forecasts.
According to the agencies, enhanced forecasting capacity would provide stronger socioeconomic support for critical sectors such as aviation, agriculture, marine services, healthcare, and disaster risk reduction.
NiMet and MSS are both ISO-certified for aviation meteorological services, and discussions also explored the possibility of replicating Singapore’s successful provider-user aviation research model within Nigeria’s aviation industry.
The meeting further examined issues surrounding cost-recovery mechanisms, legal frameworks, workforce productivity through AI deployment, and the role of Quality Management Systems (QMS) in strengthening operational efficiency and workplace standards.
Both Nigeria and Singapore are members of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Nigeria hosts the WMO Office for North, Central and West Africa, while Singapore hosts the WMO Regional Office for Asia and the South-West Pacific.
The two meteorological leaders underscored the importance of global partnerships, cross-border collaboration, and knowledge sharing in improving forecasting accuracy, strengthening capacity building, and delivering life-saving early warning systems worldwide.
