NiMet, NCCC Move to Formalise Partnership on Climate Data, Early Warning Systems

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) have agreed to deepen collaboration on climate services, climate data management and national climate resilience initiatives, with plans to formalise their partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The agreement was reached during a courtesy visit by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, to the Director-General of the NCCC Secretariat, Dr. Nkiruka (Tenioye) Majekodunmi.
During the meeting, Prof. Anosike underscored NiMet’s role as the custodian of Nigeria’s long-term meteorological records, saying the agency provides the baseline atmospheric data required for climate trend analysis, climate risk assessments and the development of reliable climate projections.
He called for stronger collaboration between the two institutions in developing climate projections, strengthening early warning systems, standardising climate data and conducting joint research to support evidence-based policymaking.
According to him, closer cooperation would enable policymakers to access more localised, science-based information needed to implement effective climate adaptation and mitigation strategies, while improving the translation of global climate projections into practical advisories for communities and climate-sensitive sectors.
Prof. Anosike also noted that reliable meteorological and climate data are essential for accessing international climate finance, adding that both organisations could jointly pursue funding opportunities to support climate resilience, early warning systems and critical climate infrastructure.
Responding, the Director-General of the NCCC Secretariat, Dr. Majekodunmi, commended NiMet for its contributions to weather and climate services in Nigeria and expressed support for closer institutional collaboration.
Both agencies agreed to formalise their relationship through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding that will provide a framework for sustained cooperation in climate services, climate data management, research, early warning systems, capacity development and other areas of mutual interest.
The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of NiMet and the NCCC to strengthening Nigeria’s climate response through enhanced institutional collaboration, improved climate services and evidence-based policies aimed at protecting lives, livelihoods and the environment.
