The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has received the AfriGEO Weather, Climate and Early Warning Services Award for its contributions to weather and climate services, early warning systems and climate resilience through Earth observation.

The award was presented to NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, by the Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Prof. Matthew Olumide Adepoju, at the 10th AfriGEO Gala Dinner in Abuja on Wednesday.

The ceremony formed part of activities marking the 10th AfriGEO Symposium, a major African platform for advancing the use of Earth observation, geospatial information and environmental intelligence to support sustainable development and resilience.

The 2026 symposium, held under the theme, “Earth Observations for a Resilient Africa,” brought together policymakers, scientists, development partners, private-sector stakeholders and practitioners from AfriGEO’s 33 African member states.

The recognition highlights NiMet’s role in applying weather, climate and Earth observation information to strengthen early warning and support evidence-based decision-making in Nigeria.

Through its weather and climate services, the agency provides information intended to help government institutions, communities and other stakeholders anticipate and respond to weather and climate-related risks.

NiMet said it would continue to strengthen the use of Earth observation and climate information through innovation and strategic partnerships, in line with the Federal Government’s climate-resilience agenda.

The agency said its focus remained on delivering timely and actionable climate information to support a safer, better-informed and more climate-resilient Nigeria.

The AfriGEO recognition comes as African countries increasingly seek to harness Earth observation technologies and environmental data to improve disaster preparedness, climate adaptation and sustainable development across the continent.
