NiMet Secures ISO 9001:2015 Certification for AeroMet Services at Yola, Osubi, Owerri Airports
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has secured ISO 9001:2015 certification for its aeronautical meteorological services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports, further strengthening Nigeria’s compliance with international aviation safety and quality standards.
The development followed a directive by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, to NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike, to ensure strict compliance with safety regulations and sustain the upward movement of Nigeria’s ratings by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
NiMet achieved the certification after a successful third-party audit of its aeronautical meteorological products and services provided to the aviation industry at the three airports by Certech Inc., Canada.
The rigorous audit, conducted from July 20 to 23, 2026, found NiMet’s services to be in conformity with the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 standard.
The latest certification adds Yola Modibbo Adama International Airport, Sam Mbakwe International Airport, Owerri, and Osubi Airport to the agency’s expanding ISO-certified operational locations.
NiMet was also successfully recertified to the ISO 9001:2015 standard at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; Enugu International Airport; and Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.
The certification is valid for three years and will be subject to annual surveillance and maintenance audits ahead of the next recertification exercise scheduled for 2029.
In a letter dated July 26, 2026, addressed to the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, Certech’s Lead Auditor and Director, Frank Strohmeier, said the objectives of the surveillance audit had been achieved.
The letter, titled “ISO 9001:2015,” stated that a systematic process audit was conducted with emphasis on risks and objectives in line with ISO 9001:2015 requirements.
Following the audit, Certech Inc. Canada issued a revised certificate confirming that “The Nigerian Meteorological Agency quality management system conforms to the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 for the provision of meteorological services to the aviation industry.”
The latest achievement is particularly significant because it represents the first ISO 9001:2015 certification audit of NiMet’s Aeronautical Meteorological (AeroMet) products and services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports.
Reacting to the development, NiMet’s Director-General, Professor Charles Anosike, expressed satisfaction with the achievement, commending the agency’s Quality Management System team led by Rotimi Adenubi for its commitment.
“We are excited about this. Our Quality Management System (QMS) team led by Rotimi Adenubi have been working round the clock to achieve this feat. We are not stopping here as management is focused on overall improvement of standards at all our operational locations,” Anosike said.
The agency said the certification reflects its continued efforts to strengthen the quality, reliability and international compliance of meteorological services supporting Nigeria’s aviation industry.
With the latest certification and recertification exercises, NiMet continues to consolidate its quality management framework across Nigeria’s international airports, in line with global aviation meteorological standards and the Federal Government’s focus on improved safety and operational efficiency.
