President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has concluded all necessary arrangements to address a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives on June 12 and will also deliver a national broadcast as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day celebration.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja while inaugurating an inter-ministerial committee tasked with coordinating the anniversary activities.
With just over a week to the event, Akume urged members of the committee to commence work immediately to ensure a successful celebration.
According to the SGF, the commemoration will run for an entire week and feature a series of activities, including a press conference on June 4, Friday prayers on June 5, an inter-denominational church service on June 7, a public lecture on June 9, youth and women-focused programmes on June 10, and a gala night on June 12.
Senator Akume explained that, in line with the current economic realities and the administration’s commitment to prudent spending, this year’s Democracy Day celebration would be conducted on a relatively modest scale. He also paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 pro-democracy struggle, particularly the late Chief MKO Abiola, whose sacrifices he described as the foundation of Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The SGF further noted that the occasion would provide an opportunity for the Tinubu administration to showcase its achievements in strengthening democratic institutions and advancing its reform agenda despite prevailing economic challenges. The inter-ministerial committee, made up of ministers, security chiefs and senior presidential aides, has been assigned responsibility for planning and executing all approved activities for the celebration.
