The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged governments at all levels, town planners, and development partners to ensure that bicycle lanes are incorporated into road construction projects as part of efforts to create cycling-friendly communities.

The Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Mallam Shehu Mohammed, made the appeal in Abuja during the flag-off of the 2026 United Nations World Bicycle Day celebration.
He emphasized that promoting cycling goes beyond providing an alternative means of transportation and represents an investment in public health and environmental sustainability.
Represented by the Deputy Corps Marshal, Clement Oladele, Mohammed noted that the FRSC acknowledges that safe cycling depends on adequate infrastructure as well as responsible conduct by all road users.
He stated that the Corps is strengthening advocacy efforts for the development of protected bicycle lanes while encouraging a culture of shared road use between motorists and cyclists.
According to him, every journey undertaken by bicycle helps reduce traffic congestion and harmful emissions.
He further explained that cycling enhances physical well-being and offers an affordable means of transportation for students, traders, and low-income earners.
The Corps Marshal assured that the FRSC would continue promoting cycling through sustained public enlightenment campaigns focused on visibility and safety for cyclists.
He also called on cyclists to ride responsibly, comply with traffic regulations, and act as ambassadors for safer and more environmentally friendly transportation.
In her goodwill message, the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, said the theme for this year’s celebration, “Boosting Urban Life with the Bicycle,” underscores the significant role cycling can play in tackling traffic congestion, pollution, road crashes, and sedentary lifestyles in rapidly expanding urban centres.
Represented by Justice Eberechi Nyesom-Wike, Dongban-Mensem commended the United Nations for dedicating a day each year to raise awareness about the importance of cycling.
She also encouraged stakeholders to collaborate with the FRSC in implementing the National Cycling Policy.
Representatives of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria and other cyclists’ associations, in separate solidarity messages, pledged their support for the campaign, noting that bicycle riding can help reduce transportation costs, especially in rural communities.
