Senator representing Benue South Senatorial District, Comrade Abba Moro, has admitted that government at all levels failed in its responsibility to protect the people of Yelewata from the deadly attack that claimed hundreds of lives one year ago.

Moro made the declaration on Saturday while speaking with journalists during a one-year memorial thanksgiving Mass held in honour of victims of the Yelewata massacre in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

The lawmaker spoke as residents, families of victims, religious leaders and dignitaries gathered to commemorate the first anniversary of the attack that occurred on June 13, 2025, when suspected Islamist terrorists invaded Yelewata community and killed more than 200 people, including women and children.

Describing the anniversary as a painful moment for the community and the state, Moro said the day serves as a reminder of government’s inability to guarantee the safety of citizens and their property.

“Today is a sad day especially for the people of Yelewata. A very sad moment, no doubt about it, a very sad reminder of our inability to protect our citizens and the lives and property of our citizens.”

The senator noted that the event was not only a period of mourning but also an opportunity for leaders to reflect on their responsibilities and the actions needed to prevent future tragedies.

He expressed satisfaction at the unveiling of a memorial monument dedicated to the 271 victims who lost their lives during the attack, saying the monument would stand as a lasting reminder of the tragedy and the need for accountability.

In a blunt assessment of leadership, Moro stated that government had failed the people who entrusted leaders with power through their votes.

“Quite frankly, I think that as a government, we have failed in our responsibility, in our obligation to the people who support us in the rain and in the sun to get into government,” he said.

He lamented that many politicians have once again shifted their attention to electoral campaigns and political calculations rather than focusing on governance and the protection of lives.

According to him, leaders are “gallivanting from pillar to pole” seeking votes while neglecting the primary purpose of holding public office, which is ensuring the security and welfare of citizens.

He stressed that the continued attacks and killings across Benue State should compel government officials to concentrate on saving lives and addressing the worsening security situation rather than engaging in premature political activities.

Moro described the memorial as both a sad and significant moment, urging leaders to reflect on where they have fallen short and take decisive steps to restore confidence among the people.

He also commended Barrister Frank Utoo, a native of Yelewata, and and international Human Rights advocate, for drawing international attention to the massacre and helping to keep the memory of the victims alive.

The senator prayed that the community would never again experience such devastation and called for renewed commitment towards securing lives and property across Benue State.
