Russia, Nigeria Move to Deepen Strategic Partnership as New Envoy Presents Credentials

The Russian Federation and Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations following a high-level meeting between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister,Georgy Evgenievich Borisenko and Nigeria’s newly appointed Ambassador to Russia, Joseph Olusola Iji.

Ambassador Iji formally presented copies of his credentials to the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister during a meeting held in Moscow on June 18, marking the commencement of his diplomatic mission in the Russian Federation.

According to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, discussions focused on advancing the long-standing friendly ties between both countries and exploring new opportunities for cooperation across key sectors.

The two officials reviewed current issues affecting bilateral relations and emphasized the importance of intensifying political engagement between Abuja and Moscow. They also expressed a shared commitment to expanding collaboration in trade, economic development, science and technology, humanitarian affairs, and other strategic areas of mutual interest.

The meeting underscored the growing importance both nations attach to their partnership amid evolving global political and economic dynamics. It also highlighted efforts to build on existing cooperation frameworks and unlock new avenues for investment, innovation, and people-to-people exchanges.

Nigeria and Russia have maintained diplomatic relations for decades, with cooperation spanning education, energy, agriculture, security, and technological development. The appointment of Ambassador Iji is expected to further strengthen diplomatic engagement and facilitate deeper collaboration between the two countries.
