Abdulsalami to INEC: Stay Neutral, Deliver Credible Polls

Former Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee (NPC), General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remain impartial and ensure justice for all political parties, irrespective of political pressure.

General Abubakar made the call in Minna, Niger State, while receiving the INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, and National Commissioners during a courtesy visit to his residence. He pledged the continued support of the National Peace Committee ahead of the Osun governorship election and the 2027 general election, stressing the need for elections that are free, fair, credible, and conducted on a level playing field.
The elder statesman described the position of the INEC Chairman as one of the most demanding and critical offices in Nigeria’s democratic system. He also disclosed that the National Peace Committee would hold a strategic meeting in Abuja on July 29, ahead of the official signing of the Peace Accord for the Osun governorship election on July 30.
Earlier, Professor Amupitan assured Nigerians that their votes would count in both the Osun governorship election and the 2027 general election. He explained that the visit was to honour General Abdulsalami Abubakar for his contributions to democracy, peacebuilding, and national stability, while also seeking the support of the National Peace Committee towards the successful conduct of the Osun governorship poll and the 2027 general election.
