Beyond Politics: Why Jerry Adams’ Nomination Stands Out

Governor Uba Sani’s decision to nominate Jerry Adams as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election has largely been greeted with widespread approval across Kaduna State and beyond.

Unlike many political appointments that often spark debates over religion and ethnicity, Adams’ emergence has attracted commendation from party members, political stakeholders, civil society groups, and public commentators. The broad acceptance suggests that Governor Sani’s choice was not merely political but a strategic decision that resonates with a wide cross-section of Kaduna residents.
The significance of the nomination is better appreciated against Kaduna State’s political history. The office of deputy governor has traditionally served as an instrument for political balance and inclusion, reflecting the state’s religious and ethnic diversity. Previous deputy governors, including Stephen Shekari, Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa, Ramallan Yero, Barnabas Bala Bantex, and Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, all emerged within the context of maintaining that delicate balance. Jerry Adams’ nomination continues that tradition while introducing a stronger emphasis on competence.
One of the major reasons for the positive reception is the established working relationship between Governor Uba Sani and Jerry Adams. Having served as the Executive Chairman of the Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS) for more than three years under the governor, Adams is already familiar with the administration’s priorities, leadership style, and governance approach. Such trust and understanding are critical in Nigeria’s constitutional system, where the effectiveness of a deputy governor often depends on a healthy working relationship with the governor.
Historically, deputy governorship selections have largely been driven by political calculations and religious balancing, with competence often taking a back seat. Governor Sani’s choice of Adams marks a departure from that tradition. During his tenure at KADIRS, Adams earned recognition for implementing reforms that strengthened tax administration, improved institutional efficiency, and enhanced public confidence. His nomination also reflects Governor Sani’s commitment to inclusion, justice, fairness, and equity, principles that have guided his administration since assuming office in May 2023.
The nomination also reinforces continuity within the administration. Having been part of the government since its inception, Adams possesses valuable institutional knowledge and a clear understanding of ongoing programmes and development priorities. His familiarity with government operations will enable him to assume his new responsibilities without the delays that often accompany the appointment of political newcomers.
Adams’ experience in revenue generation comes at a time when states are under increasing pressure to improve internally generated revenue without placing additional burdens on citizens. Kaduna State’s development agenda depends on prudent financial management, and Adams’ background in fiscal reforms, institutional development, and public revenue management is expected to strengthen the administration’s capacity to finance infrastructure, social services, and economic growth.
As he prepares to assume the office of deputy governor, Adams faces the challenge of transitioning from a respected public administrator to a political leader. While his roots are in Southern Kaduna, his new role requires him to represent the interests of the entire state. Like Governor Uba Sani, he will be expected to promote unity by building bridges across religious, ethnic, and regional divides. Unlike his previous administrative role, politics demands consensus-building, negotiation, emotional intelligence, and sustained engagement with diverse groups.
As deputy governor, Adams will be expected to maintain strong relationships with traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth and women groups, labour unions, professional bodies, business communities, and grassroots stakeholders. He must effectively communicate government policies while remaining accessible to the people. Although critics may attempt to portray him as a technocrat lacking grassroots appeal, his political success will ultimately depend on his ability to build trust and connect with the electorate.
Another important challenge will be balancing the expectations of Southern Kaduna with his responsibility to serve the entire state. While his nomination has naturally generated pride within his home region, Adams must avoid being seen as representing only one section of Kaduna. His success will depend on his ability to strengthen unity and inclusiveness rather than encourage sectional interests.
There are also valuable lessons from history. While Adams’ emergence has been widely celebrated, previous deputy governors from Southern Kaduna experienced challenges from within their own communities. Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa, who later became governor, faced criticism and hostility from some people who labelled him “pro-Zaria,” including the widely remembered incident in Zonkwa where his cap was publicly removed. Barnabas Bala Bantex also left office disappointed after facing criticism largely because of his membership of the APC, a party that has since gained considerable political acceptance across Southern Kaduna.
Given Governor Uba Sani’s leadership style, Adams is expected to play an active role in governance by overseeing key government programmes, contributing to policy implementation, supervising projects, and influencing appointments. While these responsibilities will raise his political profile, they also come with enormous public expectations. Like many elected officials before him, Adams will soon encounter increasing requests for financial assistance, employment opportunities, educational support, medical bills, and other forms of personal intervention. Even with the best intentions, no public office holder can meet all such demands. Managing these expectations through honesty, transparency, humility, and regular engagement with the people will be essential to his long-term political success.
Ultimately, Jerry Adams’ nomination represents far more than filling a constitutional requirement on the governorship ticket. It reflects Governor Uba Sani’s vision of institutionalising a leadership model that combines competence with inclusion, performance with political balance, and continuity with renewal. However, the true measure of the nomination will not lie in the applause that greeted it but in Adams’ performance in office, his relationship with the people, and his ability to justify the confidence placed in him. If he succeeds, he will not only validate Governor Sani’s decision but could also redefine the role and expectations of the office of deputy governor in Kaduna State. In that regard, Jerry Adams is indeed more than just a running mate; he represents both a new political direction and a significant test of Governor Uba Sani’s vision for a second term.
